Ian Holloway pinpoints the one thing that was wrong with Frank Lampard's appointment at Chelsea

Ian Holloway has underlined what he thinks is wrong with Chelsea's appointment of Frank Lampard and it's not what you might expect.

The Blues legend arrived at Stamford Bridge from Derby County this summer to succeed Maurizio Sarri as the club's new manager.

The former midfielder didn't enjoy the best Premier League debut as Chelsea were humbled 4-0 by Manchester United on Sunday.

It's been a tricky summer for Lampard as he worked around Chelsea's transfer ban to assemble the best possible squad for this season.

This has offered massive opportunities to the likes of Kurt Zouma, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount who all started at Old Trafford.

However, some pundits and fans have questioned Lampard's decision after a poor result on the opening day.

Former Queens Park Rangers manager and EFL pundit Ian Holloway believes that clubs are undermining their managers by labelling them as 'head coaches'.

Speaking to talkSPORT's Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, he said: "I know what it's like to be in Frank's shoes, you need time.

"It's crazy, the merry-go-round in football right now is absolutely nonsensical. It doesn't make sense.

"These are huge businesses and all the players, who should be working hard for the man that is a 'first-team coach', 'head coach', it's nonsense.

"He's the manager, so listen to what the manager says. We're being undermined all the time. I think Frank was the right choice, personally.

"I think he was the right choice. If Sarri wanted to go and lets face it, media people, we drove him out because nobody liked him.

"We're going to keep going on about two, three games these days. That's how it works.

"We're analysing and really, if I'm Frank, this is what I'm being told to do, this is what we're going to do and they have no other choice at the moment because they've got no movement.

"I will only judge Frank on who he signs, how much he spends, which he can't do."

Chelsea take on Liverpool in the Super Cup on Wednesday night, hoping for an improved showing after Sunday's heavy defeat.
