Ian Garry confident in bid for Cage Warriors title as he targets UFC signing

Irish MMA star Ian Garry is intent on kicking through the door into the UFC as he eyes a Cage Warriors title tonight.

Nicknamed 'The Future', the 23-year-old Dubliner is undefeated in six fights since making his professional debut in February 2019.

Likened to Conor McGregor, Garry's career could well follow a similar trajectory as he finds himself fighting for the Cage Warriors welterweight belt at CW 125 in London.

And as he prepares to face veteran Jack Grant (17-6) in the main event, Garry insists that there's only going to be one outcome.

"He (Jack Grant) is a very skilful opponent, a very experienced opponent, but at the end of the day I've said before - I'm just better than these guys," Garry told the Irish Mirror.

"It's just about me going in there and proving how good I am.

"I want there to be no argument that I am the best welterweight in Europe outside the UFC, and that's it everyone knows what's next."

Speaking to media ahead of his previous fight - a comprehensive KO over former UFC fighter Rostem Akman - Garry outlined his battle plan for the near and long-term future.

While admitting he's learning with every fight and evolving as a fighter, he's aiming for the very top and plans on staying there rather than just enjoying the view.

But first he's determined to get into the UFC, and he's in the perfect place with Cage Warriors proving a historical breeding ground for some of the promotion's top European talents.

He said: "That fight went exactly as I planned, I think I'm going to go in there - everyone thinks they can beat me until we step in that cage.

"They realise that they don't decide what happens, I do. I have control over people that I enjoy and I can make them move in ways they didn't think was possible.

He added: "The fighting for me is fun, I chose to be a fighter. So when I get into the cage that's my fun, that's my enjoyment.

"It's like a footballer running out onto the pitch, that's where they get to have their most fun.

"It's enjoyable, I'm looking forward to getting back in the cage and proving I'm the best, and putting that exclamation point on what I've been saying since day one."

The battle plan hasn't changed for Garry three months on from his last outing.

Tonight represents a big opportunity to turn a few more heads, and if he can wrap some Cage Warriors gold around his waist, he might just catch the attention of the world's biggest promotion.

"The plan is the exact same," he added.

"I have my eyes set on the best promotion in the world, and I want to be the best and leave a legacy. That has not changed whatsoever.

"The UFC know I'm coming, but first I'm going to win the belt, I'm going to be a champion, and then I'll see how being a champion feels."
