Ian Evatt sends players message after Bolton Wanderers promotion wait continues with Exeter City loss

Ian Evatt believes his Bolton Wanderers side cannot dwell on their defeat to Exeter City which has ensured their quest for automatic promotion will go down to the final weekend of the season.

Wanderers missed the chance to guarantee their place in League One next season with a 2-1 loss at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Gethin Jones put the Whites ahead in the first half to put Wanderers in control against the Grecians.

But the Devon side got back into the encounter thanks to Randell Williams as the visitors kept their hopes alive of reaching the League Two play-offs.

And Exeter took all three points at the death when Pierce Sweeney nodded home from Jack Sparkes' free kick to secure victory for the Grecians.

Wanderers still are in the hunt for automatic promotion out of League Two and can guarantee their place in the top three with victory next weekend over Crawley Town in the final game of the campaign.

Evatt felt there was 'fear and nerves' in his side after taking the lead and admitted it was a concern.

But he wants his side to dust themselves down ahead of taking on the Red Devils next weekend and wants his players to come through adversity once more, as they have done on numerous occasions this season.

He said: "It’s a concern, of course it is, but we can’t dwell. We’re going to be disappointed, there’s no two ways about that but we have to dust ourselves down and go again.

"This team has been through adversity this season and answered questions before. We’ve got one more big one to answer on Saturday.

“I think if we’d have drawn the game it gives us that bit of a cushion if Morecambe draw, but it’s disappointing.

"It’s the chicken and the egg at the end because they’ve put everyone forward including the goalkeeper and left Shaun and Doyler and if we could have just got the ball and broke we’d have probably scored. Debriefing is simple, we just didn’t play as well as we can and we had too many below par.

“It was a well worked goal and we had other moments in the first half that we didn’t take.

"They were throwing caution to the wind and putting people forward, running forward, and we didn’t cope with it well enough second half and didn’t play well enough with the ball.”

Hundreds of Bolton fans gathered outside the UniBol to welcome the team to the stadium on a day they could have secured promotion back to the third tier of English football, though it was ultimately not to be yesterday.

And Evatt had his say on the welcome his team received.

He said: “It was great to see them obviously, providing it’s done in a peaceful and supportive way.

"We’re all disappointed, but hopefully we can get the job done for next week.”
