Ian Evatt pays Ipswich Town compliment after win as Bolton Wanderers boss sends fans message

Ian Evatt felt Bolton Wanderers beat a 'high quality' team with 'fantastic players' in the form of Ipswich Town as he praised the Whites fans for their 'outstanding' backing of the players.

Wanderers had not won since late November and had been on a five-match losing streak in all competitions prior to this encounter.

They took the lead after the break when Kieran Lee struck to slot home after Aaron Morley's shot was saved by Christian Walton.

And Bolton made the result secure when Dapo Afolayan came off the bench to latch onto George Edmundson's poor backpass to slot home and ensure Wanderers have done the double over the Tractor Boys this season.

Evatt paid compliments to the Tractor Boys with their recruitment and the calibre of players they have attracted and felt encounters such as this are always going to ebb and flow.

But he believes that there was more solidity and more of a structure to his team that was not seen in the midweek loss to Wycombe Wanderers and it helped pay dividends in the end.

And Evatt paid tribute to the Wanderers fanbase for their backing of the players in the game which he felt helped his side pick up the three points, their first of 2022.

Evatt said: “When you’re playing against these high quality teams like Ipswich, they’ve got some fantastic players and they’ve recruited really heavily, in those types of games they are going to ebb and flow.

"You are going to have to weather storms, you’re going to have to see things out, and then you’re going to have to take the opportunities when you get them.

“First half we had some moments and some opportunities again and it would have been easy for the players to lose focus and to lose confidence, but the start of the second half, unlike Wycombe or other games, we were more compact, we were more solid, we gave them very few opportunities and then we grew back into the half and when we got our opportunities, we took them.

“I think the first goal was an excellent goal, really well worked, good movement.

"We had one really similar just before it where Dion nicked it off Aaron’s toes when Aaron looks like he’s about to score and then that goal just gave the players more energy and more belief.

"The stadium came alive again and I must say our fans were absolutely outstanding in backing the players. I thought the way they supported the team was fantastic and first class and that helps everybody when we’re all together like that. It helps you get results against really good teams.”
