Ian Evatt on Ronan Darcy's first Bolton Wanderers League Two start and explains substitution

Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt felt Ronan Darcy 'didn't do himself any harm at all' with his appearance against Mansfield Town.

The 20-year-old was handed his maiden start of the season in the fourth tier of English football last night in the 1-1 draw against the Stags.

Wanderers head coach Evatt said the academy star would be given a chance in the lead-up to the game against Mansfield, after impressing with cameos against Bradford City and Leyton Orient.

Darcy lasted nearly an hour in the League Two encounter against the Stags, but was replaced before the hour mark by Arthur Gnahoua in the aftermath of Wanderers going behind to George Lapslie's header.

Bolton managed to salvage a point from the encounter thanks to Antoni Sarcevic's late leveller.

And Evatt delivered his verdict on Darcy's first start of the season in League Two, believing that he 'didn’t do himself any harm at all' with his performance against the Stags.

The Wanderers head coach also explained that Darcy's withdrawal was more down to a tactical change that Evatt wanted to make at that stage in the encounter, rather than anything the midfielder had done wrong.

He said: "I thought first half he was very good. Him and Ali (Crawford) have got a good relationship in training and on the pitch. They look for each other and they link up well.

"First half we dominated the possession and dominated the play, controlled the midfield. Second half, physically we just got a bit overrun and it’s his first first team start, he didn’t do himself any harm at all.

"He’s a very, very good prospect, is Ronan, he’s got a very big and bright future at this football club.

"The change wasn’t more of what he did wrong, it was more tactically we needed another body up the pitch, especially with conceding the goal and to try and force them back a bit, because they were on the front foot at the time."
