Ian Evatt explains decision not to play Jamie Mascoll in Bolton Wanderers' loss to Tranmere Rovers

Ian Evatt has explained why he chose not to turn to Jamie Mascoll when Bolton Wanderers were seeking a way back against Tranmere Rovers over the weekend.

The Trotters succumbed to a 3-0 loss to Rovers at the University of Bolton Stadium.

The visitors won thanks to goals from Peter Clarke and Kieron Morris, as well as James Vaughan's penalty.

In that match, Bolton made just one change as Harry Brockbank, who started as left wing-back, came off for Ali Crawford.

The subsequent switch around on the pitch led to Gethin Jones swapping to the left flank and Lloyd Isgrove playing more on the right to accommodate the change.

Speaking after the game, Evatt pointed to the lack of options he has on the bench in the forward areas at the moment owing to injuries suffered by Shaun Miller and Arthur Gnahoua.

He admitted that Wanderers had to resort to swapping wing-backs in a bid to change games with an 'imbalance' to the Bolton squad at present.

Mascoll, 23, is a left sided defensive player who has operated in the wing-back role at times this season, but Evatt chose not to turn to the former Wycombe Wanderers man this weekend.

And he said that the decision was made based on what he sees in daily training as well as games, adding that conclusions are reached based on what he believes is best at the time.

He said: “It’s my choice at the end of the day and I see them day to day.

"Jamie’s had opportunities this season as has everybody so it comes down to what I think is best at the time.

"I’m the manager, I’ll make those decisions based on what I see every day and based on what I see in games.

“I know where we’re at at the moment in my mind, I’m clear as day.

"Am I going to tell you? No, I’m not but I know where we’re at. We need to improve - no doubt."
