Ian Burchnall sounds Torquay United warning as Notts County chase EFL return

Ian Burchnall says Notts County must not get lost in the euphoria of their play-off glory against Chesterfield as he warned of the threat Torquay pose to their EFL dream this weekend.

The Magpies head to Plainmoor on Saturday for the semi-final clash knowing one win will leave them one victory away from a return to the Football League.

But they face an arduous task against Gary Johnson's Gulls who finished runners-up to champions Sutton United.

Notts were unable to beat the Gulls over two games as the teams shared a point in the league fixtures having drawn 0-0 at Meadow Lane and 2-2 at Plainmoor.

With Notts still riding high on the back of a sensational last-minute victory against the Spireites, And head coach Burchnall maintains it is vital Notts do not lose their focus.

"We played really well down there and came away with a point," he said.

"But they've got threats we know that. They are a good team with good players.

"They are well organised and Gary Johnson has been through this before.

"He's very experienced and it will not be an easy game there. They nearly won the league and ran it really close. We know they have quality.

"We have to bring ourselves down and I am sure their fans will be pushing them."

Notts will hope former Torquay defender Mark Ellis can reproduce his heroics against his old club after his late header sealed victory over Chesterfield.

It was the centre-back's sixth goal of the campaign which is a tremendous return after only joining the club back in March.

He has become a key figure in Notts' charge to the play-offs and has offered a much-needed threat from set-pieces.

And Burchnall was effusive in his praise of the defender's contribution with many fans hoping they can make his loan deal permanent in the summer.

"In terms of commitment and winning headers like the one for the second goal and then one he scored, it's brilliant to have a big threat in the box.

"He's got a massive head!

"He's brave and doesn't mind getting his face smashed in.

"He's been magnificent so I am happy he scored and the roof came off."

Meanwhile, Callum Roberts is recovering from an operation on his lower abdomen as the Magpies attempt to get the winger fit again for the start of next season.

R.oberts limped out of the 2-0 defeat at Hartlepool back in April and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

But he was back in the stands to watch Notts beat Chesterfield in the play-offs as he battles his way back to full fitness in what has been an injury disrupted campaign.
