Ian Burchnall makes demand of his Notts County players ahead of Barnet clash

Notts County boss Ian Burchnall has told his players to match the ‘intensity’ shown in the midweek win over Sutton United when they take on Barnett on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies travel to the Hive looking to strengthen their play-off push in the National League, the side currently sit in eighth place in the table.

Notts gave themself a major boost in their play-off hopes by coming out as 3-2 winners in their last outing, thanks to goals from Ruben Rodrigues and Kyle Wootton.

The winning goal, an added-time penalty, came after defender Dion Kelly-Evans was shown red with just over 20 minutes left to play, making the result all the more impressive.

And the boss has demanded a similar approach to the weekend’s clash against 22nd placed Barnet.

“I think it was the kind of fight, spirit and intensity we showed in the last game, we’ve got to show that at the weekend and in the remaining games,” Burchnall said.

“We have to find a way of matching the intensity we showed against Sutton when we’re playing against teams who sit lower and slow the game down.

“There have been times when we’ve started with that intensity but, when we haven’t got the goal, we’ve dropped off and the momentum’s changed.

“We’ve got to keep pushing it and that has to come from everybody.”

After recording the impressive result against Sutton, who sit in second place in the league, Notts play a side at the opposite end of the table in Barnet, but Burchnall is expecting the Bees to present a different challenge to his side.

“It’ll be a very different kind of game away there,” he added.

“But I think sometimes you can play teams lower down and they just play with a bit of freedom so it can be unpredictable to know what you’re going to get.

“But I expect them to try and be maybe a lot lower block than we played against Sutton, who pressed very high.

“So, again I think the onus is on us to put our stamp on the game.”
