Ian Burchnall explains why Joel Taylor and Alex Lacey were left out of Notts County squad

Ian Burchnall says the lack of having seven substitutes has been responsible for Joel Taylor and Alex Lacey's absence from Notts County's squad.

Both players sat out Tuesday's draw with Halifax as the Magpies were held at home by the 10-man Shaymen despite dominating the game for 90 minutes.

Notts have made a tactical switch in recent weeks by moving from a back three to a four-man defence with Richard Brindley and Kyle Cameron first-choice centre-backs.

The form of Adam Chicksen is also keeping Taylor out of the starting 11 and, unlike the Football League, Notts can only name five subs on a matchday.

But head coach Burchnall says both players will have their chance given Notts' hectic run of fixtures.

"It's hard because we only have five subs and everybody's fit," he said.

"Adam Chicksen's been brilliant. That's how it is. Joel is a good football player and he's played well for us. But it's hard to pick a bench when you only have five.

"We have to think about the type of game it's going to be and who might need to come in or out during the game. We changed to a four and I use Brinds as a centre-back and I thought he has done that job unbelievably well.

"Of course then it means that there's got to be a little bit of rotation. And that's tough for those players that are not in, but one thing I'd say is that their attitudes are great.

"They work hard every day, they keep pushing the group.

"That means things will change before the end of the season, I'm sure about that. We have lots of games in quick succession and it means that those players need to be ready. We know that they've got qualities for us."
