Ian Burchnall delivers Notts County verdict as Magpies hold promotion rivals Wrexham

Ian Burchnall praised Notts County's defensive resilience as he hailed a "very smart" performance against promotion rivals Wrexham.

The Magpies had taken the lead on the stroke of half-time when Kyle Wootton scored his third goal in as many games with a terrific header from Kyle Cameron's cross.

But Phil Parkinson's side were level in the 54th minute when Paul Mullin squeezed in a header at the near post.

Notts had to defend doggedly at times in the face of an aerial bombardment with Ben Tozer's long throw a valuable weapon.

However, Notts were excellent at the back and head coach Burchnall was pleased his side showed they possess steel as well as silk.

"Everybody knows the football we want to play - it's attacking and it's a bold way of playing at times," he said.

"But you don't want to be a pushover. And to be successful in this league you have to be able to defend set-pieces, long balls and crosses.

"We did that very well. We are a little bit disappointed with the goal we conceded because it got the crowd behind them and they got the momentum.

"It was the first time they have had fans for nearly two years so we knew the crowd was going to be a massive influence on the game.

"But in the key moments we kept them quiet and kept the ball a little bit and took the tempo out of it and I thought we played very smart."
