Ian Blackford slams Celtic fans for 'sickening' anti-monarchy banner

Ian Blackford has slammed Celtic fans for displaying an anti-monarchy banner at their game against St Mirren on Sunday branding it "sickening".

The SNP 's Westminster leader took aim at the Hoops fans after chants could heard from a section of the support during the minute's applause for the late monarch which was being aired live on Sky Sports.

They were heard singing, "if you hate the Royal Family clap your hands" while a banner with the same message was also unveiled, along with a Michael Fagan CSC flag, a reference to the Buckingham Palace intruder who broke into the Queen 's bedroom.

Speaking on Sky News the MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber said people "ought to behave in a responsible manner".

He added: "Nobody wants to see things like that and people ought to be respectful for what was the death of the Queen, but not only the death of the queen but a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother.

"People actually ought to behave in a responsible manner. It simply isn't right, that is not something that we want to see. It's sickening.

"It's not something that anybody wants to see and I think we've spoken in the past about the lack of respect and in our political discourse.

"When you see things like that it does show you that we've got some way to go and that needs to be called out. I absolutely unreservedly call that out this morning."

Sky commentator Ian Crocker issued an apology after a minute's applause, saying: "Apologies if you were offended by anything you might have heard. Most showed respect, some did not."

It comes after Celtic fans were criticised for displaying a "F*** the Crown" banner during their Champions League match in Poland with Shakhtar Donetsk last Wednesday.
