IAAF poised to give Caster Semenya green light to race again

The International Association of Athletics Federations is set to give Caster Semenya the all clear to race against women, ending her 11-month exile from the sport, according to a report last night.

The runner aroused suspicions when she posted the fastest 800 metres time in the world last year, winning gold at the African junior championships.

The then 18-year-old was asked to take a gender verification test to prove she was a woman after winning gold at the World Championships in Berlin after beating Janeth Jepkosgei, the defending champion, by 2.45 seconds.

Semenya, from Polokwane, Limpopo province, has an unusually developed muscular frame and a deep voice and has clocked times which belie her youth.

The IAAF is expected to announce during the next few days that the runner can return to competitive racing, according to the Daily Telegraph. Semenya, who has not raced since her victory at the World Championships last summer, could be competing at the World Junior Championships in Canada on 19 July.
