The IAAF is facing an angry backlash after events, including the 200m featuring Britain’s world champion over the distance Dina Asher-Smith, were scrapped from the Diamond League for the 2020 season.
American sprinter Noah Lyles, who has been heralded as the next Usain Bolt and has targeted the Jamaican’s world record for the coming season, said: “Wow, no 200m”, while former world champion Dafne Schippers said: “Latest League research has shown that the 200m is one of the most popular disciplines. Seriously?”
The 200m was axed along with the triple jump, discus and 3,000m steeplechase, a decision IAAF president Seb Coe defended, saying: “Our objective is to create a faster-paced, more exciting league that will be the showcase for our sport.”
But British distance runner Jess Judd described it as “a kick in the teeth for endurance”.
