‘I would’ve immediately returned the cakes’: Woman asks for spoon at Nothing Bundt Cakes so she can eat in car. The worker’s response shocks her

We’ve all been there: You stop by a food establishment and pick up a delicious treat that’s too good to wait until you get home to eat. So, you plan to chow down in the car. However, one woman says that if you’re a Nothing Bundt Cakes customer, it may be hard to partake in this time-honored tradition.

In a viral TikTok with 79,600 views, @bren_girly shares her shock at what she was told after requesting a utensil at Nothing Bundt Cakes.

“I was like, ‘Can I have a spoon?’ ‘Cause, you know, I’m gonna eat it in the car,” she says. “And [the worker] was like, ‘We’re not allowed to hand them out. You can buy one for $1.’”

While she admits the cost is low, @bren_girly can’t believe a food establishment can’t just provide her with a utensil. “That doesn’t make sense to me,” she concludes.

‘These companies have lost their minds’

Commenters couldn’t believe the cost.

One pointed out, “ONE DOLLAR! It’s a dollar for a whole box. That’s insane.”

A second questioned, “Crumbl cookie has spoons readily available. Why would the Bundt cake have to charge?”

A few viewers provided a possible explanation. One wrote, “It’s probably due to health code/zoning/taxing. If they provide utensils that changes the classification of the establishment in some areas.”

@bren_girly responded to this comment with a video clarifying some points. First, she notes that it was a pack of spoons, not a single spoon, for $1. However, she doesn’t know how many spoons come in the pack. She didn’t care to ask since she only needed one. She also managed to eat her cake in the car. “It was just a tiny bit messier than usual,” she says.

She wasn’t able to find much information on the tax classification, but we’ve got you covered.

Is there a tax reason Nothing Bundt Cakes doesn’t offer spoons?

In a Reddit thread, a user says that when they asked for cutlery at their local Nothing Bundt Cakes, they were told that since the establishment isn’t a restaurant, it doesn’t have cutlery.

One respondent said, “They told me that if they don’t pass out forks, they aren’t a restaurant and don’t have to charge tax on the cakes.”

That prompted the original poster to respond, “Ok so I’m a tax accountant so that sounded so sus to me but it turns out that in most states there are certain exemptions of charging sales tax if it the food is meant for at-home consumption (not in store). My state is not one of these states but apparently my state does require the retailer to pay an additional sales tax on any non-essential items provided to a customer for the purpose of consuming the item sold (plastic cutlery). That’s why they don’t have it, thanks yall for helping me solve this mystery.”

Another user added, “*at least in ohio* we are allowed to hand out forks now as of this week. But, because we are a RETAIL bakery and not a restaurant, we were not allowed to just give out silverware. A lot of employees dont really understand this and dont have a great way of explaining to customers why we cannot give them, but I always tried to fully explain. Sorry she didnt actually explain and im also super late haha this is health code things :/“

Is there a way to get a free spoon at Nothing Bundt Cakes?

Another customer went viral in 2024 for their discovery that their Nothing Bundt Cakes charges for spoons. Based on user responses, whether it’s possible to get a free spoon depends on location. Some said the $5 price of their Bundtlet comes with a spoon at their location. Others said their local stores don’t have spoons at all.

What if my store charges for spoons and I really want to eat in the car but don’t want to pay for one?

As respondents in the aforementioned Reddit thread noted, you could order the brand’s Bundtinis, which can be eaten with your hand. You could also stop by another establishment and pick up a spoon or you can bring your own spoon.

@bren_girly I really don’t understand why they wouldn’t just give spoons? #nothingbundtcake #cakeconspiracy ♬ original sound – bren_girly
