'I won't let my mum-in-law use the parking space at my partner's flat – I paid for it'

Parking is an issue that can cause a lot of friction, especially if you have multiple cars that need access to a property – with only one spot up for grabs.

One woman is in a sticky situation with her mother-in-law over a parking space she owns – but the problem is it's at her boyfriend's property.

Because the boyfriend doesn't own a car, she decided to pay the fee for the parking space at his apartment, despite not living there. But after she was asked to take public transport to her partner's so his mum could park there instead, she felt very annoyed.

Explaining the situation on Reddit, the anonymous woman explained: "My boyfriend rents this apartment and I pay the fee for the parking space as he doesn't have a car but I do.

"In a few days my mother-in-law (his mother) is planning to visit and because she doesn't want to pay for a ticket (€10/£8.80) for any of the nearby garages, she wants to use the parking space."

This is a problem because she needs to use the parking space herself on the day in question.

She continued: "He asked me to pay for and travel by public transport to his house instead of using my car so she can use the parking space.

"I said no, because why should I pay for transport if I already pay the fee for the parking space, just because she is too cheap to pay for a ticket for the garage nearby (it's a five minute walk)?"

The woman was given a lot of support on social media, with many saying because she pays for the space it's her own choice.

One person said: "You are paying for the spot, it is yours. He can ask if his mum can use it, but you absolutely can say no."

Another added: "If he wants his mum to use the spot you pay for, let HIM pay for your public transit. Or her ticket for the garage. It's not your problem."

Others said if the mum had mobility issues she should give up her space, however, she confirmed she didn't.
