'I will miss him terribly': Tragic Tory candidate leaves gift of life as legacy

A Tory candidate who died just six days before this year's local elections has left the gift of life as a legacy.

George Andrew Darlington, 67, known as Andrew, suffered a stroke on Friday.

His widow, Anne Broomhead, agreed that several of his organs could be used for transplants.

A stalwart of the Salford Conservative Party, Andrew had stood several times as a Tory candidate in the Labour stronghold of Winton, without success, but was due to stand this week in Walkden South - a seat being vacated by Conservative councillor, Iain Lindley.

The election in the Walkden South ward has now been postponed and will be staged at a later date.

Anne, who is the Tory candidate in Winton on Thursday, said: "I want to thank the ambulance crew, the staff at A&E at Salford Royal and the staff in the critical Care Unit.

"Every single one of them were fantastic.  I will miss him terribly.  His organs were donated for transplant and I only hope that they help others back to a healthy life.

"The transplant team that worked with us both were also fantastic and looked after me so well. A huge Thank You to them."

Andrew was treasurer of the Salford Conservative Federation and Anne is chairwoman.

Tory candidate, tipped to become a councillor after years of trying, has died just six days before elections

Brought up in Kersal, Andrew moved to Worsley, aged 14. He attended Salford Grammar School.

"We were married on 2nd May 1982 so polling day is our 37th Wedding Anniversary. Andrew and I met when teaching at Beech Street Primary school, Peel Green 45 years ago on 1st May.

"Andrew then went on to lecture at Worsley College in AAT ( Accounting ) since finishing there he has been self - employed keeping  accounts for businesses.

"He has always worked in the community. He had been a bellringer at St Mark's Church, Worsley since 1965, and been Captain of the Tower for over over 30 years.

"He was a long standing member of Worsley Civic Trust of which he was Treasurer, a member of Worsley Woods Action Group - also Treasurer Chairman of The Old Warke Dam Society which was formed to find a way of getting the Dam in Worsley Woods dredged.

"He also set up Grange Rd Residents Association to fight against heavy traffic using the road for works access.

"He protected our environment and organised community street parties. He spoke at Public Inquiries against building on green fields and Green Belt.

"He was a member of the group who saved Salford Children's Holiday Camp in Prestatyn where he used to take groups of children when a teacher.

"He was a very caring man who supported anyone needing help whatever it was. He had great knowledge about the environment and the history of the area and history in general.

"He was very active man and was often seen walking around the area - until recently with our dog."

Les Turner, leader of the city's Tories, said: "It is a great shame. He will be sadly missed by the party and other organisations."
