'I will do all I can' to help secure Notts County's future says Lilian Greenwood MP

Nottingham MP Lilian Greenwood says she will do all she can to help secure the future of stricken football club Notts County.

Ms Greenwood, who last week met with under-fire owner Alan Hardy to raise concerns over the club’s worrying plight, gave her backing to the protest which fans organised at Meadow Lane on Saturday morning.

Around 30 supporters braved the torrential rain to make their feelings towards Hardy’s ownership clear, with the businessman in discussions about selling the club which has once again fallen on hard times, but yet to conclude a deal.

"I’m sorry not to be able to join you today,” Ms Greenwood told Notts fans keen to make their feelings known outside the stadium.

“I’d never claim to be an expert on football matters but I understand how much Notts County means to its fans and to our city and I share your concerns for the future of the club.

“I will do all I can, working with supporters’ groups, the City Council, the FA and others to try and help secure the future of Notts County."

Notts are due back in the High Court on Wednesday over an unpaid tax bill understood to be in the region of £250,000, while club staff are still awaiting their June salaries.

The Magpies, relegated from the Football League in May and preparing for life in non-league when the season gets underway next month, are under a transfer embargo meaning manager Neal Ardley is unable to strengthen his squad – a squad which are still using last season’s training kit after a financial dispute with supplier PUMA, which Hardy denies.
