'I went to one of Nottinghamshire's best beer gardens and was not disappointed'

Nestled into the countryside you will find the Dovecote Inn, which used to be a farmhouse before it became a pub in 1835. Located in North Nottinghamshire the pub is completely surrounded by countryside and sits at the top of a hill overlooking the village of Laxton, near Ollerton.

As well as a pub, the business is also a bed and breakfast and is a Channel 4 Four in a Bed winner after taking part in the 2021 series during lockdown. I was really excited to try lunch at the Dovecote Inn, as the pub has hundreds of five star reviews on TripAdvisor which praised the business for its wonderful food and friendly staff, so my expectations were high but luckily, I was not disappointed.

I decided to visit the pub on a typical Friday where I ordered some fresh orange juice and a Chicken BLT, which is a Seasoned Chicken Breast, Smoked Bacon, Crisp Lettuce, Tomato, Sundried Tomato Pesto sandwich. The food was £11, which was the average price of their lunch options, and with my drink the total came to £14, but whilst this isn't the cheapest option for a lunch, you definitely get your money’s worth in terms of quality and quantity.

One of the things I was also quite pleased with was when I ordered I was able to choose a side of either chunky chips or fries, as you get salad no matter what, so that was a win win situation. Since it was a sunny day I opted to sit outside, in one of the two large garden areas the pub has.

There was a very relaxed atmosphere, and everything was of a great standard. No rocky picnic benches or creaky chairs, even the glass I had my drink in felt fancy. The BLT I ordered was delicious, and I couldn't get over the size of it, it was just massive.

The bacon was perfectly crisp and probably the best I've ever had, and everything was just so fresh and flavourful. The salad was a dressed salad with lots of bell peppers, red onion and tomatoes, but the fries were out of this world but as hard as I tried I could not finish all of them.

There weren’t any families there when I visited since it was the middle of a school day, but there were a range of younger and older couples enjoying a bite too each as well as groups of friends catching up. Dogs are also welcome at the pub, and I spotted a few water bowls around for our four legged friends.

The staff were also really friendly throughout the visit, and were saying hello to everyone as if they were old friends and making sure that everyone was enjoying the food and if they needed anything else. It's definitely somewhere I hope to visit again, as the dinner menu looked even more impressive.
