I went to Lidl on the first morning of mandatory face mask rules in Ireland and was left surprised

In the space of a day the supermarket experience in Ireland appears to have transformed.

On visiting a Dublin Lidl on the morning of new face mask rules I was surprised to see just one out of about 50 shoppers and staff without a mask - and that could well have been for a medical reason.

This is a big change to the mixed compliance up until now.

A shop assistant in the Lidl on Walkinstown Avenue told me "about 95% of people so far today have been wearing them".

And while they don't have the powers to tell people to don a mask - it doesn't appear they need to.

Throughout the shop I could see people of all ages with various mask styles from medical types to the more colourful.

'I feel safer'

One shopper told me she thinks if anything wearing masks helps show others that we care.

Bridget Kildee, 46, said: "I feel safer but I also feel like it is a sign of respect for everyone else. And it is a sign of acknowledging what we are in right now.

"I was wearing them sporadically(so far) but in the last two weeks I've been more consistent.

"I have enough of them that I've gotten into the habit of tucking them into my bag before I go anywhere."

A pensioner inside the store, John, said from a safe distance that he thinks the new rules "are great" and he feels "much safer with everyone wearing masks".

Lidl's tannoy rang around every few minutes to remind customers they are now required to wear a mask when shopping on the premises.

And of this morning if you fail to comply you are liable to face a fine of up €2,500, up to six months imprisonment or even both.

These laws will be in place until October 5 at the earliest.

Rules are not only for the likes of Lidl and Tesco but also include shopping centres, libraries, cinemas, and museums.

Some other indoor settings are also included.
