'I wasn't in a great place mentally' - Former Bristol Rovers top scorer details painful Gas exit

Few players - perhaps only Matty Taylor in recent years - have fallen out of favour with the Bristol Rovers fanbase as quickly or as severely as John-Joe O'Toole.

The midfielder enjoyed an outstanding 2013/14 for the Gas, finishing as top scorer with 15 goals and being named in the PFA League Two Team of the Season.

However, those individual accolades were against the backdrop of the misery of Rovers' relegation out of the Football League, following the 1-0 defeat to Mansfield.

There was discord building in the stands towards the former Republic of Ireland international from February when, in an uncomfortable interview with the BBC, in the midst of a relegation battle, he declared he wanted to play at a higher level.

O'Toole said: "I'm confident I can play at a higher level. Playing regularly, hopefully, others can see that now and (who) knows what might happen in the future?"

O'Toole's decision to then activate a release clause in his contract within a few weeks of Rovers' demotion led to anger towards the midfielder before he signed for Northampton, who had only finished three points and two places higher than the Gas.

On Rovers' first game back in the Football League in August 2016, O'Toole then scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for the Cobblers at the Mem, further cementing his villainous status.

Speaking to the Northampton Chronicle, O'Toole has touched on his departure from the Mem as he struggled to get going in his first season at Sixfields.

"It had been a tough summer and obviously it didn't start very well for me at Northampton," O'Toole said.

"I wasn't in a great place mentally and I was still struggling with the relegation from the previous season and I had a few personal issues that I wasn't dealing with too well either."

It was Chris Wilder, now of Sheffield United, who persuaded O'Toole to move to Sixfields but his choice of new club was a further kick in the teeth to Rovers fans, in the context of that BBC interview and a desire and belief he should be playing higher up the pyramid.

"When I met with the manager, he was positive and it seemed like the club was going in the right direction," explains O'Toole, who is now with Burton Albion.

"They had only just stayed up the season before and I went down that year with Bristol Rovers so it was a little bit funny to go from the club that got relegated to one that just stayed up, but it was quite a hard summer and I wasn't in a particularly great place at the time.

"I think there were talks with Gillingham but it never materialised and Northampton offered me a three-year deal which was nice because it gave me some stability."
