I was wrong about Rangers title but Celtic struggles with no fans prove predictions are impossible - Gordon Parks

To the naked eye it appeared just another letter - a Glasgow postmark on a while envelope.

On closer inspection, it was one for CSI Investigation. The spider writing was a worry, a forensic examination of the letter revealed someone with too much time on their hands and an unhealthy relationship with football.

The rantings were all things Rangers and out popped a prediction piece written by yours truly, dated July 2020.

Bold red pen, capital letters. 'THIS AGED WELL ....YOU *******..."

A correspondence which throws up a few questions. Who would keep a copy of someone backing Celtic to win the title for that length of time and why?

Anyway, each to their own and then came the coup de grace of prediction faux pas as a podcast from May 2018 was dug back out and aired on social media accompanied by some unflattering remarks.

Steven Gerrard had just arrived at Ibrox and I described it at that time as a "showbiz coup”.

Then chairman Dave King had just made his "pack of cards" comment and again if memory serves, "delusional" and "fantasy" was this writer's reaction along with the suggestion it would take £30million to even start to bridge the gap from across the city.

There is a disclaimer attached to any statements ahead of time and the famous quote that making predictions are notoriously difficult, especially about the future, rings true.

Another truth is that Nostradamus would have struggled to foresee the Celtic collapse of recent months.

It's been a stunning achievement by Gerrard and his Rangers players to a 20-point lead with six games remaining to deny their old rivals what would have been a 10th title in a row.

Also in the interest of putting it all out there, my belief at the start of the campaign was that, and I quote. "The major issue for the Light Blues is that, man for man, they lacked the class to match Celtic, with keeper Allan McGregor and Borna Barisic the only two contenders for a place in the strongest Old Firm select."

That opinion has been altered over time and proof of how dramatic the changing of the guard has been this term is that only Callum McGregor and David Turnbull would be getting a game in that team now.

Football is a game about opinions and having the conviction to say things which may go against the grain and one such issue is the mitigating circumstances of playing in a season where nothing is normal.

Over the last eight months, this writer has attended at least one game each week, lifeless fixtures, a string of glorified bounce games which even piped in crowd noise fails to disguise. Sitting at home and watching on tv, you just don't get the same sense of how sterile and artificial games have become without an atmosphere of both the good and the bad of fans.

Celtic haven't adapted well enough whereas Rangers have flourished without having to cope with the pressure of having fans on their backs.

That's not to diminish the achievement, it's just a statement which is backed up by one look at the biggest clubs across Europe who have struggled with the absence of not having their usual huge support.

Look at Liverpool who have lost six consecutive home games to bring and end to a 68 game unbeaten Anfield run. Juventus, Benfica and other big hitters are suffering a similar fate.

So congratulations to Rangers, a fantastic success based on consistency and huge improvement across the board.

And to my pen pal, it's an opinion mate, no need to buy another stamp and get the scissors out.
