I was speeding to avoid falling asleep, driver tells Lancs police

Police say they had a busy shift on Lancashire's roads last night - but they weren't as tired as one motorist who caught their attention.

Officers from the Lancashire Road Police team pulled over the driver for speeding - and he gave them a rather unusual excuse.

He told officers he was driving fast in order to avoid falling asleep at the wheel.

The incident was reported on social media by the road police section of Lancashire Constabulary when filing an overnight report of its activities, although it did not specify where it happened and at what speed the motorist was clocked.

The bulletin, shared on Twitter at 2.46am this morning, stated: "It was busy with motoring offences during this shift with several traffic offence reports issued.

"One driver who was reported for driving without due care and speeding stated that he had to drive fast as he was nodding off when driving slowly! Please drive safe folks."
