'I was so visibly upset she guessed'

It has been a worrying few days for mums and dads during this year's school admissions round.

A Guardian survey has found local authorities have failed to give one-fifth of parents their first choice for their children.

Last year, Brighton and Hove revised its catchment areas and introduced a lottery to allocate places at oversubscribed schools.
