The lack of coverage on a Land’s End swimsuit for toddlers sold at Costco has left the internet calling for a wider selection of appropriate children’s swimwear.
On June 19, concerned mother and TikToker @crazyginger95 posted a video criticizing Costco and Land’s End. She says she purchased a swimsuit with less coverage than expected due to what she argues was misleading packaging. The video has amassed over 493,000 views as of Wednesday.
She begins by showing viewers a pair of underwear and a swimsuit with what she describes as having appropriate coverage.
“This is a Genevieve swimsuit from Ruffle Butts,” she says. “It’s a toddler 3T swimsuit. Super large crotch, three snaps. Ruffles. Perfect, right? Full butt coverage.”
“This is her underwear,” she continues. “Crotch is a little bit skinnier, but honestly, not by much. Looks great. It’s like three inches across. Perfect.”
Costco swimsuit
However, the video takes a turn when she realizes that the swimsuit she just purchased from Costco has roughly a third of the coverage as the past two garments she showed. “This is a three-piece swimsuit I bought from Costco. [From] Land’s End,” she says.
“The width that’s supposed to cover my daughter’s entire body part…an inch,” she says while demonstrating. “And look, her butt would be totally exposed, both sides.”
Viewers were shocked to see the lack of coverage on the swimsuit, expressing frustration with Land’s End. “I was NOT expecting that my jaw dropped,” wrote one user. “That’s wild.”
“Ewww wtf that looks like a thong,” read another comment.
“Why would a toddler need a bottom suit cut like that?” asked one individual. “Lands End design team is wrong.”
She had no idea when she bought it
Later in the video, she explains that she purchased the swimsuit not knowing that it has such little coverage, claiming that the packaging was misleading and led her to believe there would be more coverage.
“And I couldn’t see this when I bought it, because it was tucked inside this rash guard, which is why I bought it,” she says. “A long-sleeved rash guard… Perfect.”
“Not even an inch of fabric between the seams. Absolutely ridiculous. Makes me want to freaking crash out.”
Many commenters not only criticized Cosco for selling the item, but also called for children’s clothing brands to produce a wider range of appropriate swimwear.
“No but why is it so hard to find a toddler swimsuit with SHORTS why do all of the rashguards have bikini bottoms,” a user wrote.
One user replied to that comment, saying, “THIS!! I’m sick of GIRLS underwear being bikini style, let alone swim suits! Can we STOP that ENTIRELY, please! No, of course not. Because society is sick and twisted, & wholly endorses [inappropriately objectifying] children in the names of ‘fashion’ and ‘self expression.’ It’s disgusting.”
Many users called upon each other to voice criticism of Costco so that it could have a better selection.
“Costco has a team of people who hand pick their merchandise,” said another user. “100% a Costco issue. That’s unacceptable. You can use their feedback tab on the website to make a complaint! Our girls deserve better”
