I was looking for a unique way to exhibit my favorite photographs – Don Johnson's unorthodox gallery wall is the solution

Don Johnson.

While I am always fascinated by the artworks and photographs that contribute to a gallery wall, I've been finding the physical frame arrangements less inspiring. As a celebrity style editor, I've seen several dozen gallery walls this year alone, and despite enjoying the images, I admit I hadn't felt motivated to emulate a gallery wall in my own home. Then I saw Don Johnson's twist.

Rather than following traditional gallery wall ideas down to a T, the Miami Vice actor has deconstructed some frames, meaning some hang on the wall (as is standard), while others are balanced on the floor, for a more relaxed, almost unfinished look.

When I first saw this arrangement on Don's wife's Instagram, I was struck by its perfectly imperfect aesthetic. It's a lighthearted and more interesting way to showcase my favorite artworks and memories, and it's incredibly easy to recreate. All I need are various-sized frames and some floor and wall space where I can get creative.

I'm planning to bring Don's look to the floor, but you can create a similar effect with some frames on your cabinet, as Lisa Hensby of Lisa Hensby Design & Build Studio explains.

'A deconstructed gallery wall – where some frames lean casually on the floor or perch on a console or cabinet – gives such a relaxed, curated vibe. It’s the opposite of overly coordinated or meticulously measured picture hanging. Instead, it feels effortless, personal, and full of stories,' she says.

'Think “collected over time” rather than “hung to perfection.” It’s the kind of setup that makes a space feel lived-in and loved, with just the right amount of nonchalance.'

When experimenting with this gallery wall alternative, Lisa first recommends mixing up heights and formats. 'You might prop a large piece directly on the floor, letting it rest against the wall in that cool, laid-back way, then layer in smaller artworks just in front or off to one side,' she explains. 'This kind of staggered arrangement adds depth and visual interest, drawing the eye in and around the display.'

As a renter, this alternative is a unique way to bring my favorite prints to the forefront of my living room. However, practicalities aside, it's always sure to provoke a conversation with anyone who passes through my home.

'The beauty of this style? It’s low-commitment - no nails or hammers required - which makes it super renter-friendly and ideal for anyone who likes to switch things up. You can add, edit, or rearrange on a whim,' Lisa adds.

'It adds instant personality to a space, like a little window into your taste, your travels, or just the things that make you smile.'
