'I was in buckets of tears' - Gaetano Berardi's departing Leeds United message revealed

These last 12 months at Elland Road have signalled the start and end of two overlapping eras for Leeds United.

Ending a 16-year hiatus from the Premier League by landing the Championship title last summer, the Whites have been universally applauded for how they've handled life back in the big time.

It was an approach which brought success, too, as Marcelo Bielsa and his vibrant Leeds side finished ninth in the table - ahead of other established top-flight clubs such as Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Amid a remarkable run of late-season results, they also came within touching distance of European qualification.

Those dreams are for future years, though, as Leeds prepare to wave goodbye to two players who formed a key part of their identity during the Championship years.

Indeed, the final day victory over relegated West Brom, at Elland Road, marked the farewell appearances of Pablo Hernandez and Swiss defender Gaetano Berardi.

Berardi had been with the club since a summer switch from Sampdoria ahead of the 2014/2015 campaign.

It was an emotional afternoon for Hernandez, Berardi and the returning supporters fortunate enough to visit Elland Road on the back of Covid-19 restrictions being eased. But what did the departing Swiss tell former Leeds frontman Jermaine Beckford about his departure?

Speaking on the official LUFC podcast, Beckford said: "It was phenomenal, genuinely phenomenal.

"I had a chat with both of the boys afterwards about it and I said to Berardi; 'How were you feeling when you were coming off?' He said; 'When my number came up, I knew it was the last time I was going to play. It wasn't an issue.

"Then [Liam] Cooper came up to me and said; 'We're going to miss you, we're going to absolutely miss you'. By the [time that the] second or third person came over, I was in buckets of tears'.

"This is a man who has led the line incredibly wear and worn the badge with so much pride and he's as hard as nails."
