I was convinced this color combination was overused until I saw it in Kourtney Kardashian's entryway – it's so chic and utterly timeless

Kourtney Kardashian.

Monochrome is as stylish as it is versatile. Black and white is a popular palette from the kitchen to the bathroom, but one place we have seen it appear repeatedly is the entryway.

Here on the celebrity style desk, we see this color combination time and time again, and I admit, I was starting to feel unexcited by black and white entryways. Then I saw Kourtney Kardashian's twist, which instantly reminded me of its timelessness.

In the space in question, white walls are contrasted by black-framed photographs and artwork, as well as black hardware on the door. It's giving me some fantastic black and white room ideas, all of which will look just as chic in a decade to come.

While the rest of Kourtney's space (seen here on Instagram) is uniformly white, including a sconce on the wall, the black accents make the area visually interesting as well as incredibly chic, and designers agree with me: it's a fantastic design choice.

Design insiders say that black and white entryways are the ideal mix of adventurous and refined, making for an ideal first impression in the home.

'If you're looking to make a bold statement with your entryway, and you favor darker color schemes, a black and white entryway is a great way to go,' explains Kathy Kuo, founder and designer of Kathy Kuo Home.

'It's striking but doesn't go overboard with any mixing and matching. Anytime you choose a monochrome look, especially for a space like the entryway that really sets the tone for your entire home, you're committing to a distinctive point of view; and the fact that you've limited your color palette means there's so much room to create artful contrast with shapes and textures.'

When it comes to the styles that black and white fits well into, designers say that the possibilities are wide-ranging.

'This palette works effortlessly across a wide range of design styles,' explains designer Nina Lichtenstein.

'In a modern or contemporary setting, black-and-white emphasizes clean lines and geometric form, often paired with sleek finishes and sculptural lighting. In a more traditional home, the duo feels heritage-rich. Picture black-and-white checkerboard floors, intricate millwork in high-contrast paint, and brass fixtures that add warmth. It also complements transitional, art deco, farmhouse, and even industrial aesthetics with equal finesse.'

If you're working with a white painted hallway, consider adding black accents via accessories like candles, rugs, or lamps.
