Twice a week we publish problems that will feature in a forthcoming Dear Jeremy advice column in the Saturday Guardian so that readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy’s own insights. Here is the latest dilemma – what are your thoughts?
My office has employed new ways of working and, as part of this, we have the option to work more flexibly, including at different locations.
As I live more than a 90-minute commute from the office I have asked to work at home two days a week, as I know other colleagues outside my team have been doing so and, for them and the company, it appears to have been working.
My role could be done from any location. However, my boss immediately told me that he wouldn’t employ someone again who could only do three days in an office, which isn’t fair as I would be working five.
I am not sure what to do as this type of comment and attitude – in the light of the way my colleagues’ work arrangements have been sympathetically treated – has unsettled me and made me unsure about him wanting me in the team.
