I want to leave my English-teaching job in Spain. Is a master's worth the money?

I enjoy teaching English but believe it is a job with little security and few career moves.

Twice a week we publish problems that will feature in a forthcoming Dear Jeremy advice column in the Saturday Guardian so that readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy’s own insights. Here is the latest dilemma – what are your thoughts?

After graduating from university with a 2:1 degree five years ago, I worked in a bank call centre (one of the worst experiences of my life) before, eventually, landing an internship in a NGO for a year.

Once my internship was up, I decided to move to Spain to learn Spanish, which is a decision I’m still not sure why I made, but I am happy I did.

I currently teach English, which seems to be what 99% of English native speakers do here. I’ve come to the decision that, while it is enjoyable and earns me enough to live cheaply but well, it is a job with little security and few career moves.

Apart from my general interest in marketing and communications, I’ve been out of the industry for nearly two years. I want to re-enter the job market, however my question is whether a master’s would be worth the ink on my CV.

I have written the usual 40+ applications without response. Do I want to spent a year of study and another chunk of debt on something that an employer will potentially not place much worth on?
