'I visited Yorkshire's 'worst' seaside town - I ended up feeling pretty confused'

Bridlington, East Yorkshire has recently been voted as the 'worst' seaside town in Yorkshire, ranking low in all-important categories such as scenery, attractions, peace and quiet, and value for money.

This unfortunate title follows a damning survey from Which?, with the consumer testing company drawing data from more than 4,000 UK visitors.

These reviews were then compiled in a table, showcasing some of the gems of the great British seaside, as well as the parts that are regarded as somewhat less idyllic.

At 61 percent, Bridlington ranked the lowest out of any other Yorkshire seaside town, falling way behind the impressive 85 percent awarded to Northumberland's beautiful coastal village of Bamburgh.

With this in mind, Yorkshire Live's Megan Banner decided to pay a visit to Bridlington herself on March 31, in order to make her own mind up.

Megan ended up feeling surprised by just how low the town had ranked, when she herself noticed its many positive charms, despite heading up there on a "wet and windy Wednesday".

As the tide had come in, Megan sadly wasn't able to give a fair assessment of the maligned beach, which she admits did "look a bit pebbly". However, as Megan quite rightly put it "we're not exactly expecting Barbados now are we?"

When it came to attractions, Megan found plenty to enjoy in Bridlington, writing: "A quick Google search and you're inundated with things to do in the seaside resort, from amusements and crazy golf to theatres and restaurants. The town really does have something for everyone.

To me the place was a kids' dream - I imagined myself spending hours on the arcades as a child, and the town must have had more amusements and rides on the seafront than another seaside resort I have ever visited. The fair music alone was enough of a buzz".

Although more "understated" than bigger seaside towns such as Whitby, Megan praised the "breath-taking scenery of the cliff edges", noting that Bridlington is catered to those "who enjoy a stroll along the promenade".

For lunch, Megan ventured to Fish and Chips At 149 for a good old-fashioned chippy tea, declaring the chips there to be "possibly some of the best I've ever eaten and the portions were enormous".

Megan was left feeling rather "surprised" that Which? visitors didn't regard the town as being good value for money, noting that she herself spent under £10 on fish and chips and parking.

She concluded: "Overall, I'm pretty shocked at the result and would recommend Bridlington to anyone. I can't wait for my next visit, hopefully in the sunshine next time".
