Sleep isn’t something I take lightly. I need a full eight hours to feel like myself, and anything less leaves me struggling to get through the day. While I naturally gravitate towards a firm mattress, I’m also a side sleeper, which means I need enough cushioning to keep my hips and shoulders comfortable through the night. It’s a tricky balance to get right, and that’s exactly where a good mattress topper can make all the difference.
In my experience, the right topper can completely transform your sleep setup. Whether your mattress is too firm, starting to sag, or simply past its prime, a well-designed topper can breathe new life into it – without the need to spend thousands on a brand-new bed. After testing dozens of options in my review of the best mattress toppers, one stood out above the rest: Simba’s hybrid mattress topper. So much so, it impressed me enough to earn the title of best overall mattress topper. But because comfort is subjective, I also enlisted help from my parents, who have different sleep styles (back and stomach), are in their 60s, and have different health and sleep requirements.

Unboxing
The Simba hybrid topper arrives much like a bed-in-a-box: compressed, rolled, and tightly wrapped in plastic. Once freed from its packaging, I rolled it out directly onto my mattress and left it to expand (which I always find satisfying).
It took a few hours to fully take shape. But I’d recommend giving it a full day before sleeping on it for the best results. The only downside here was a noticeable off-gassing smell when first opened. It wasn’t overwhelming, but it did linger for a day or two, so I aired the room out and left windows open, which helped clear it fairly quickly.
The topper has four wide elasticated straps – one for each corner – that slip easily over your mattress (as long as it’s no deeper than 30cm) to hold everything securely in place.
The anti-slip base is another standout feature. Once in position, it genuinely stayed put throughout the night, even with me tossing and turning. That said, it’s still easy enough to reposition when needed.
I also really liked that it can be rolled up for storage, with the straps doubling as a way to keep it neatly secured when not in use. It’s a small detail, but a practical one.
Design

What sets the Simba topper apart from many others I tested is its hybrid construction. Rather than being purely memory foam, it combines a foam layer with pocketed micro springs. In practical terms, that means it offers both cushioning and support.
At 6.5cm thick, it’s definitely on the chunkier side for a topper, and it feels more like adding a mini mattress to your bed than just a thin layer. It also features a removable, washable cover, corner straps, and an anti-slip base – all thoughtful additions that make a real difference in everyday use.
Comfort
Comfort is where this topper really shines. I sleep on a firm Hypnos mattress, and while I love the support, it can, on occasion, feel a little unforgiving on my shoulders and hips when lying on my side. This topper completely changes that.
At first, it felt slightly firmer than I expected – especially during the first couple of nights – but it quickly settled into a more balanced medium-firm feel. For me, that was ideal. It softened the surface just enough to relieve pressure points without losing the underlying support I prefer.

The combination of foam and springs worked brilliantly for my sleep style. My shoulders and hips felt cushioned, while my spine stayed aligned – something my parents also picked up on. My mum (a back sleeper) said it supported her lower back well, while my dad (a stomach sleeper) didn’t feel like he was sinking too deeply, which can often be an issue with softer toppers.
Another thing I noticed was how responsive it felt. I move around a lot in my sleep, and this topper adjusted instantly rather than leaving that “stuck” feeling you sometimes get with memory foam.
Sharing a bed, I was initially worried the springs might make it feel bouncy, but that wasn’t the case at all. Movement isolation was surprisingly good and I barely noticed when my partner got in and out of bed, and even when our toddler climbed in during the morning, it didn’t disturb me as much as I expected.
Breathability
I tend to sleep warm year-round – windows open, one leg out of the duvet, the works – so overheating is always a concern for me, especially with memory foam.
Thankfully, this topper handled temperature really well. I stayed comfortably cool throughout the night and actually found myself staying under the duvet more often. While the surface felt slightly warm to the touch in the morning, it never caused me to overheat while I slept.
Compared to other dense foam toppers I’ve tried, this felt noticeably more breathable, and I never woke up feeling clammy or sweaty, which was a huge relief.
Care

Maintenance is refreshingly simple. The topper has a removable cover that unzips easily and can be machine-washed at up to 40C. Simba recommends using minimal detergent and avoiding harsh chemicals like bleach, which is fairly standard.
It can also be tumble-dried on a low setting, which makes it easy to keep fresh – especially important if, like me, you share your bed or have kids occasionally jumping in.

Is the Simba hybrid mattress topper worth it?
In short, yes, absolutely. The Simba hybrid mattress topper was chosen as the best overall buy in my round-up for good reason. This is an elite option and, without question, the best topper I’ve tested. It strikes that rare balance of comfort and support, delivering cushioning exactly where I need it while still maintaining a supportive feel for different sleep styles.
I particularly loved that it isn’t just pure memory foam. The addition of springs makes a noticeable difference, offering better support for both side sleepers like me and back sleepers like my parents. It’s also impressively breathable, keeping me at a comfortable temperature all night.
There’s no denying it’s a premium buy, and the price may give some people pause. However, it has the potential to extend the life of your current mattress, which could save money in the long run. The good news is that Simba regularly reduces the price of it. Plus, the 200-night sleep trial gives you plenty of time to decide if it’s right for you.
How I tested
I tested the mattress topper for two months alongside my partner. Since sleep is deeply personal – and what works for a side sleeper like me might not suit everyone – I also enlisted help from my parents, who have different sleep styles (back and stomach), are in their 60s, and have different health and sleep requirements. I considered the following:
