I'd say that testing out one pair of the best wireless earbuds per month over the year is pretty good — that's likely more earbuds than most folks are going to see throughout their entire lives. Unless you're a frequent earbuds loser or breaker. You monster.
It's given me a unique picture of the kinds of earbuds that you can buy at the moment, and which you should add to your portable audio arsenal. Be that comfort, sound, or extra features, these earbuds have all 'wowed' me in some way.
So let me talk you through some of my favorite earbuds of the last 12 months, and why you need to grab at least one pair before the year is out. If you're looking for a replacement for an old pair or just an upgrade now that you've done a spot of saving, here are some excellent options.
Under $130 — Sony WF-C710N
The Sony WF-C710N wowed us in a number of ways, although one of the biggest was the bravery of one of its colorways. There's a resurgence at the moment of transparent tech, but the jolly-rancher-esque clear candy blue of Sony's buds is something to behold. I, personally, love the color, and I'm glad there's something with some sense of aesthetic fun in the earbud space.
Beyond that fancy-shmancy color, there's what Sony has packed into the buds to talk about. They sound incredible for the price, with a profile matching more expensive models. They're detailed, spacious and plenty dynamic and engaging. They prove you don't need to spend loads of money to get something that sounds excellent.
A comfortable fit and solid ANC round out what is a very tasty package indeed. If you're looking for something more affordable, the WF-C710N earbuds are your best bet.
Under $150 — Cambridge Audio Melomania A100
The Cambridge Audio Melomania A100 might not have the massive battery life of their predecessor, but they more than make up for it with some of the best sound you can find without spending hundreds of dollars. Cambridge Audio has brought the entire might of the audio quality department to bear, making a detailed and spacious sound that's going to please anyone who slots them into their ears.
Of course, there's more to the Melomania A100 than just good sound. They're very comfortable, and I'm a big fan of the small, smooth case that easily slips into a pocket. They've got good battery life — up to 39 hours total — and the touch controls are decent.
They're another more affordable option that manages to feel a whole lot more expensive than the price might suggest. The perfect on-the-go companion for an audiophile on a budget.
Under $400 — Noble Fokus Amadeus
I love audiophile earbuds. Those designed for "sound, the sound, and nothing but the sound." That pretty much describes the Noble Fokus Amadeus down to a tee. They sound absolutely insane, with some fabulous bass, mind-blowing detail, and some of the most impressive mid-range representation you'll ever experience.
They're comfortable thanks to their wide range of fitting options, but I'd recommend you stick with a pair of the flanged tips. Those improve the already solid ANC, bringing them up to par with Sony and Bose. It also improves the sound, making sure that the seal is good for some lovely controlled bass.
Battery life of up to 40 hours is excellent, but the audio customization is where it's really at. Thanks to Audiodo, you can create your own sound profile, which works out how well you can hear and adjusts the sound accordingly. It works very well and makes the buds sound even better, no matter your hearing ability. Very nice.
