'I've spent £3k on baby clothes but I'm not pregnant - everyone thinks I'm ridiculous'

Buying clothes for your little one is an exciting task for expectant mothers.

Rifling through adorable babygrows and tiny pairs of shoes is one of the best parts of pregnancy - and some mums get started right away.

Others, it turns out, get started before they are even pregnant at all.

A 29-year-old woman has revealed she and her partner are planning on having a baby one day, when they have saved up some money.

But in the meantime, she's got stuck into buying clothes to kit out her tot once they actually exist.

However, she spent so much money on the garments - £3,000 to be exact - it's causing a rift in her relationship.

She wrote on Mumsnet: "I’m 29 and very broody. We can’t have a baby yet as we need to save money to raise them, feed them and send them to school.

"I have £5,000 in savings. We’d also really like to move up the property ladder.

"My [significant other] and I need to complete postgrad exams in order to advance in our profession (£2-3k each). We do not share our disposable income and never will do.

"I am so looking forward to having a baby one day. Sometimes I see baby clothes that are just so cute, I feel like I have to buy them or I’ll never see them again.

"I’ve spent probably £2-3k on baby clothes in the 3 years, I’d say around half on sale.

"My [significant other] is upset because he feels that I’m throwing money away."

The woman added that she thinks they are actually "saving money" in the long run and it's a "smart idea".

"We have a shared budget of £50k for offspring and I can definitely save this by the time I’m 35 (it will take me 30 months to save £25k)," she wrote.

"Surely it only matters that I eventually save the money, not that I save it at the same rate as him."

The woman said her partner is getting more and more anxious about money and is being "stubborn".

Their arguments on the issue have got worse and worse, and she was at her wit's end.

Her fellow Mumsnet users were quick to voice their opinions on the matter - with many agreeing that the woman was being ridiculous, given the baby would grow out of the clothes within weeks.

One replied: "£2-3,000 on baby clothes is ridiculous if you have a baby. I never spent anywhere near that on my babies. You are being very unreasonable I'm afraid."

"£2-3,000 on clothes for a not-yet-existing baby is a waste of money, babies really don't need that many clothes and grow out of them so fast," added another.

"You are being ridiculous! £2-3,000 on baby clothes when you're not even pregnant is insane," ranted a third.

"Even if you had a baby that's a crazy amount of money. What will you do if you can't conceive? You're setting yourself up for some serious heartache."
