'I've seen enough to know I’m coming back" - Martin Luther King III impressed by first visit to Nottingham

It’s been a week of surprising events.

We’ve had a having a meat pie in Ye Olde Trip, some of our finest homegrown actors on the same stage but being themselves this time, and the eldest son of Martin Luther King Jr in town.

They were all in Nottingham for the same reason - the at the Royal Concert Hall.

We know that Emilio Estevez enjoyed his pub dinner (), and Bafta-winner Vicky McClure was "proud" to have been part of the event alongside fellow Television Workshop graduates Joe Dempsie and Bella Ramsey (both best known for Game of Thrones), but what did Martin Luther King III make of his first visit to the city?

Well, despite only being in the city for the day, on this his first visit to our city, Martin Luther King III was impressed.

"You think about Nottingham and you think Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham,” the 62-year-old human rights activist told NottinghamshireLive.

But while he and his wife, Arndrea Waters King, didn’t have time to visit the major oak and Sherwood Forest during their flying visit, or see the castle which is still shrouded behind its protective covers as it undergoes its restoration, he did say he had had a “very wonderful trip”.

“I have been really impressed by what I’ve seen.  It’s not been a lot but that will give us an opportunity to come back.”

He added: “What I see is a lot of construction which is a good sign and I see that in London as well.”

“What I have seen is enough for me to know I’m coming back.”

And when can we expect him?

“Within the next year or so,” he said.

During the event on Tuesday (November 5), he sent a message to the people of Nottingham - not only the young people that had already undertaken charitable events to earn their invitation to WE Day, but also the larger community.

He said: "I’m sharing what my mother and father instilled in me and what we try to instill in our own daughter, which is the is love of self. Before you can truly love others you have to love yourself. But then you’ve got to love your family. You can choose your friends but you’ve got to love your family.

"Then, and this is significant, you have to have a love of your community. When we master loving our community we see homelessness disappear, we see mental illness at least addressed, we see bullying disappear… these are things that can be created in our world.

"And the final component for me personally is having a connection to god - a love of god. In my family it is a formula that works."
