'I've got to say' - Gareth Southgate sends Jordan Pickford England hint after Everton season

Gareth Southgate has seemingly given his backing to Jordan Pickford to remain as England number one heading into EURO 2020 following a strong finish to the season.

The Everton goalkeeper's place had come under threat earlier in the campaign for both club and country following a number of high-profile mistakes.

The 27-year-old missed out on international duty for the Three Lions back in March after suffering an abdominal muscle injury, but has been an impressive performer for the Blues since returning to injury.

And when assessing his goalkeeping options after naming his provisional 33-man squad for EURO 2020, Southgate was full of praise for how Pickford has returned to top form.

"Sam (Johnstone) and Aaron (Ramsdale) have finished the season well with their clubs," he told reporters. "(And) Dean is in that battle for the number one spot at Manchester United at the moment.

"But I've got to say Jordan has finished the season really strongly. Since he's come back from his injury, his focus and calmness in goal has really stood out.

"I'm really pleased with his form."

Pickford wasted no time in emerging as Southgate's first-choice after being handed his international debut back in 2017.

Totalling 30 caps to date, he played a key role for the England side that finished fourth at the 2018 World Cup and third at the 2019 UEFA Nations League as he emerged as a hero in penalty shoot-out victories over Colombia and Switzerland respectively.
