‘I’ve been shopping at Whole Foods for 7 years and have never’: Woman asks a simple question at the Whole Foods bread counter. Then another worker intervenes

One woman says she made a simple request at Whole Foods and another worker stepped in to tell her no. In a TikTok with over 2,600 views, Bella (@thelil_bill) says she doesn’t typically go to Whole Foods when she needs groceries, but she decided to go that day. She went to the bread counter where there were many “lovely looking” loaves and selected an olive one.

This is where things go downhill.

After selecting her bread, she asks a man behind the counter if he can slice it for her. He agrees, but before he can begin, another worker comes up and says, “She needs to slice it herself.” The man relayed this to Bella and came from behind the counter to show her where the slicer is.

An older gentleman was slicing three loaves of bread, and she observed him closely because she had never used a slicer before. When the man found this out, he said, “You need to learn,” and kindly helped Bella slice her olive loaf.

Bella describes the situation as “crazy,” but she was very happy with her bread.

‘My Whole Foods doesn’t do that’

In the comments section, viewers were surprised that she was expected to slice her own bread.

“This is news to me…” user Alex said. “I’ve been shopping at Whole Foods for 7 years and have never sliced my bread.”

Bella responded, “I know … I thought they were messing with me but true enough there was a bread slicer.”

User Fabiola Servin wrote, “You slice your own bread? My Whole Foods doesn’t do that.”

Do you have to cut your own bread at Whole Foods?

As Bella’s experience and contrasting comments section would suggest, it depends.

In a Reddit post on the r/mildlyinfuritating sub, a Whole Foods customer posts a picture of the new customer bread slicer at their local store and says, “You Now Have to Slice Your Own Bread at Whole Foods. I Hope Bezos Uses the Money He Saved on Labor to Get to the Moon.”

Commenters didn’t see the issue and considered it a first-world problem. Some even said they preferred this option.

@thelil_bill Another day another slice of bread and honestly super thankful for kind people &lt3 #bread #wholefoods #kindpeople ♬ original sound – Bella for real

However, in a post on the grocery chain’s Facebook page, the company states, “Ask one of our bakery Team Members to have any artisan bread sliced just how you need it.”

The company also states on its website, “If you need only half a melon, fish fillet, wedge of cheese or loaf of fresh bread, we’re happy to provide just the half you need.”

The Mary Sue reached out to Bella via TikTok comment and direct message. It reached out to Whole Foods via email.
