I've been rewatching the iconic TV series Desperate Housewives – and its nostalgic interiors have taught me a lesson in truly lasting, heritage design

Desperate housewives cast around dining table with candles, flowers and glassware.

There's been a real love towards nostalgic movie interiors lately. For many of us, Nancy Meyers' list of creations probably first springs to mind, but for me, there's one TV show that embraces that all-American, heritage aesthetic that many of us today are trying to recreate – Desperate Housewives.

As I began rewatching the show (a big commitment, I know, seeing as there are eight seasons in total), I loved remembering the crazy plot lines, but I also noticed how beautiful the homes are. They are each unique in style, but all embrace a similar sophistication that often comes with classic American interior design.

If you've ever seen the show, you'll know that each house is so fitting for every character and is filled with timeless decor ideas, sophisticated colors, and vintage furniture. It's been twenty years since the show first made its debut, but it's still teaching us a lesson in lasting transitional design that feels traditional and trendy.

So, feeling inspired to embrace the styles of Wisteria Lane, I've picked out the key looks (and the decor pieces to recreate them) that embrace that elevated, traditional aesthetic.

Bree Van De Kamp's home is the epitome of heritage style at its best. It's Bree's home that I look forward to seeing the most, as it's filled with all sorts of treasures and nostalgic trends that are actually very 2025. I've spotted plenty of antique furniture, ornate lighting, and grand pieces of art in her home, all adding to the timeless elegance of its design.

Take this traditional dining room idea, despite edging on the more formal side, it could easily grace the pages of today's interior design magazines, embracing heritage design without feeling overly ornate. From the dark wood dining table to the Persian-style rug, the room is sophisticated and refined, enhanced by the vintage candelabra and wall sconces. It's very Bree.

Through the doorway, we get a peek at the farmhouse kitchen idea. Painted in an on-trend butter yellow shade and plenty of kitchenware that's used decor, the space hasn't dated in the slightest.

Despite embracing 2000s design trends, many aspects of Gabrielle Solis' home feel chic and timeless. Her home is definitely more lavish compared to Bree's traditional Americana aesthetic, but that's not to say it's not stylish. In fact, plenty of the furniture and decor in Gabrielle's house is antique, mixed with modern pieces. It's a bit OTT yes, but doesn't feel dated even 20 years later, in fact, with the '00s making a comeback, it's actually very on trend.

Gabby's house can instantly be recognized when you walk down Wisteria Lane (I've been to the movie set and spotted it instantly) due to its butter-yellow painted exterior. Undoubtedly an intentional color choice, Gabrielle's home represents her style and flamboyance, steering clear of any fusty or traditional connotations by always donning a glamorous wardrobe.

Proven by the front porch idea pictured above, Gabrielle's home embraces a cool bohemian feel combined with more ornate decor and furniture (note the marble wrought iron table balanced with the rattan loungers). In typical Gabrielle fashion, there's plenty of bold color too.

Here we see Bree's butter-yellow kitchen idea as the heart of the set. It's such a sociable space, all designed around the central island that sees a lot of drama through the show.

There's plenty of rustic decor in the kitchen, notably the array of copper pans hanging above the island, but it's clear that the perfect amount of eclecticism has been applied to every area of the space, particularly the shelves of vintage ceramics and china that frame the breakfast area. An array of antique bowls, jars, and teapots gives the area a sense of sophistication but also a dose of cozy familiarity, reminiscent of the cottagecore trend.

A perfect balance of old and new, Bree's kitchen is a lesson in practical yet authentic design that feels timeless and elevated.

With the pale blue and cream color scheme, the relaxed furniture, and vintage lighting, Lynette Scavo's living room is the perfect example of the newly established Coastal Grandmother style that's back on trend for 2025.

It's a relaxed, effortless space that suits her family-led lifestyle yet still feels well-designed and considered. I spotted plenty of vintage-style pieces from the ceramic lamps to the framed paintings scattered around her home, each giving the space a more lived-in feel – you would never know this family living room was a purpose-built set.

To recreate the look, embrace heritage prints like ginghams and florals, natural fabrics, and classic, homely furniture from plush sectionals to traditional wooden dining chairs.

I love Desperate Housewives for its juicy plotlines and likeable characters, of course, but its enviable interiors are truly iconic and I am appreciating their timelessness even more on my second viewing. Each of the housewives' homes feels classic, chic, and sophisticated, but none are overly trendy, and for that reason, they don't feel dated, even 20 years on.
