'I've banned my father-in-law from babysitting - he didn't change nappy all day'

When it comes to going out after having kids, it can be daunting to leave your little ones in the care of someone else.

However, one new mum thought she had nothing to worry about when she dropped her three-month-old baby girl off with her father-in-law, as she headed off for a doctor's appointment.

The unnamed mum soon discovered this wasn't the case, when she returned to collect her daughter a few hours later.

Speaking anonymously to Kidspot.com.au, the Australian parent shared how she was horrified to discover her father-in-law hadn't changed her daughter's nappy at all as he didn't think it was "appropriate".

The parent explained how she went to the doctors and it ended up being a long day of waiting and tests, so she was exhausted when she arrived back to pick up the baby.

She claims when she picked up her daughter, she was hit by the smell of urine that had leaked through her swaddle.

Initially, she thought nothing of it, thinking she'd just had an accident while napping - but when she went to change her, she realised she hadn't been changed in a while.

"It was very obvious that Isabelle had pooed a while ago, bits of it were hard and stuck on to her skin like a second layer. Her nappy was as full as I had ever seen or felt it but the worst part of it all was when I started to wipe her bottom with wet wipes," the mum said.

"Firstly, Isabelle began to cry which was highly unusual but soon enough I could understand why. Her skin was covered in nappy rash, it was very red and looked extremely painful."

Confused, she headed out to ask her father-in-law why he hadn't changed her and his answer changed the woman's perception of him as a suitable caregiver.

He replied that he didn't change her at all as he "didn’t think it was appropriate because he was a man, and she was a baby girl, and he didn’t feel comfortable."

The mum was "flabbergasted" by this but also "furious" that her baby had been left in pain by something that could have been avoided.

Her father-in-law is said to have apologised but he didn't think he was in the wrong, adding that he won't ever change the little girl's nappy.

The mum updated to say that her daughter recovered quickly, but that her husband's dad has been banned from looking after her in the future.

Probably for the best!
