I used Morrisons' ‘package for Sandy’ code to see if it worked

Sometimes asking for a pad or tampon in public can be a difficult and awkward experience however the supermarket chain Morrisons has introduced a method to make it a bit easier.

You can now discreetly ask staff for a 'package for Sandy' and receive sanitary products for free and with no fuss, as WalesOnline reports. Package for Sandy was introduced in 2021 to help battle period poverty and now the initiative is available in 497 stores across the UK.

The scheme is similar to that of 'ask for Ani' in Boots where people can seek help from domestic violence and 'Ask for Angela' in a bar, pub, or club when people feel unsafe on dates. One of our reporters tried out the initiative, to see if they would be successful in different Morrison's asking for Sandy.

In the first shop, after not waiting long at customer service, Bethan was successfully served a 'Ask for Sandy' package, which came in a discreet brown paper that had Sandy written on it.

Inside the bag were two sanitary products, perfect for anyone who needed them and the staff were friendly and discreet throughout the experience. At the next store, a similar experience happened where the staff understood immediately what Bethan was asking for and came back with two brown bags.

The next store was slightly busier but the discreet phrase, asking for a package for Sandy, meant other customers would not know what Bethan was asking for. Again Bethan had success getting the package and so far all the interactions had taken less than a minute, meaning it was not awkward for Bethan.

The fourth and final store had a little more trouble as they had run out of 'Ask for Sandy' packages, however in all stores the staff members knew exactly what Bethan was asking for. Overall the scheme seems to run very well and none of the staff made Bethan feel ashamed or degraded.
