'I tried Tom Hanks' 'Diet Cokagne' cocktail to see if champagne and Coke really do match'

Tom Hanks recently divided fans online by revealing that he has invented an unusual cocktail called 'Diet Cokagne', which only has two ingredients – Diet Coke and champagne.

During an appearance on the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the American actor explained that he had come up with the genius invention by chance.

Hanks isn't much of a drinker, so his go-to fizz is a Diet Coke, but during the festive holidays a celebratory bottle of champagne was brought round and he didn't want to miss out. Given he had a glass of Diet Coke already, he asked them to put a shot of champagne in there for good measure.

Everyone around him called him "insane", but he said he wanted to "celebrate the season" – and revealed that it was "delicious".

Stephen Colbert said: "It's gorgeous. It's like an American Aperol Spritz."

Ignoring the parody namesake, I decided to try it out for myself – Diet Coke, Champagne, Aperol Spritz – these are all words that catch my attention.

I decided to go all out and put the strange concoction into champagne flutes, but instead of champagne I opted for prosecco – it's tough times after all and we can't go around wasting the real stuff if it doesn't turn out to be good.

I'm in good company it seems, as thousands of people on TikTok have also tried the 'Diet Cokagne' recipe with some swapping out the champagne for prosecco. American actress Elizabeth Banks even used sparkling wine from a can instead.

To stay true to the bizarre creation, I also popped a few ice cubes in there, as that's what Hanks and Colbert did on the show.

It's safe to say I wasn't disappointed. I knew it wouldn't be bad, but I didn't expect the flavours to go together so well. Frankly, I agree with Tom, it is delicious.

There's kind of a watered down Diet Coke flavour, followed by a lovely prosecco aftertaste, and the two notes go together really well. Don't get me wrong, it's no Aperol Spritz, so fans of the orange cocktail might be disappointed.

It's certainly not going to change your life either, but it's a pleasant enough tipple, and if anythinggives you a little caffeine hit with your prosecco.

I don't think I'd buy this if I was on a night out, but if I was at home and not wanting to go too heavy on the booze, I wouldn't say no to one. Plus, an added bonus is that it will help you stay awake!

If you want to try this yourself, it's three parts Diet Coke (or any Coke product), and one part champagne, or any other sparkling wine you desire.

Colbert described the drink as "strangely, strikingly, shamefully good," and he's not alone. One person on social media said: "In Tom Hanks we trust. #Cokagne – not bad at all".

Another said it "tasted like heaven".
