I tried TikTok's viral pasta chips as a crisps alternative and almost lost a filling

Spending lunch breaks scrolling on TikTok, I have come across various hacks and dinner recipes.

But one snack has gone viral with 332.4 million videos linked to the hashtag.

Pasta chips is the latest trendy snack, according to Tiktokers and noticing that most of these videos are American, I assume they are meant to be an alternative to crisps.

I have yet to discover the reason why anyone would want to swap a packet of McCoys (other brands are available) for something you have to cook, but here we are.

My curiosity and hunger got the better of me and I thought it would be a great idea to try it out. Most TikTok recipes are usually easy so my lack of cooking skills shouldn't have been an issue.

So what are pasta chips, I hear you ask.

Well, they are crunchy pasta serves with a dip or sauce of your choosing. Pesto seems to be a popular choice on the video app.

You cook the pasta al dente, season with whatever you want, add olive oil, parmesan and air fry at 200 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Serve with a dip.

TikTok has gone wild over this snack, with people sharing their recipes and interpretations, adding sauces and using different types of pasta from penne to ravioli.

Didn't seem too difficult and despite not having an air fryer, I opted for an oven, hoping to get some Instagrammable lunch.

I followed the steps, switching olive oil for sunflower and bunged the pasta in the oven.

It smelled okay, smelled like basil and cheese so I was hopeful.

Well...hopeful for 15 minutes until I checked on the dish and saw what can only be described as charcoaled pasta.

But I was dedicated by this point. I wanted to follow through. So I collected the less burnt ones, the edible ones, side of garlic and herb dip and the pasta chips was ready for the taste test.

Dear God, what a mistake.

That crunch that people were showing off, almost took out my filling. That sharp pain in the back of my mouth, went straight through my head. My dentist will be delighted.

As for the taste-what taste? It tasted like pasta. Crunchy, under-cooked, bland pasta.

I'm still looking for the reasoning behind cooking already dried crunchy pasta to then make it crunchy again.

I'm all for trying out new things, but I think I'll stick to my packet of cheese and onion crisps as a snack.
