I tried the unique takeaway with no menu and had the best ribs of my life

I tried one of Merseyside’s most unusual Chinese takeaways to see what it had to offer.

When I first heard about Sixty Kitchen in Formby the concept of the restaurant piqued my interest. The takeaway has no menu, you can’t go inside the building and it only serves sixty covers a night.

The premise is intriguing; at its foundation, it aims to provide quality over quantity. The takeaway's set menu is a fixed price of £60 and I wanted to know if it was worth it.

I ordered the food through the Sixty Kitchen app and was asked to pick a time slot for my delivery. It felt odd not going through the menu endlessly trying to decide what I wanted but I also found it a nice change of pace.

One of my concerns about the takeaway was if it would be able to feed four people and with it being a set menu would I like the food on offer?

For my meal, I was given a portion of BBQ pork ribs, chicken cashew curry, duck spring rolls, chili shredded beef fillet, fried rice, and a portion of salt and pepper chips.

The first thing that I noticed when my order was delivered was how much food I got. I shared the meal with three other people and it was more than enough.

I tried the ribs first and they were the best I have ever had from a takeaway. They fell off the bone and melted in my mouth. I hope they are on the menu every month.

The contrast between the sweetness from the sauce and the saltiness from the ribs was a great combination and the perfect way to start the meal off.

I was most excited to try the chili shredded beef fillet as I always order it and was elated to see it on the menu. After eating the ribs I had high expectations and was not disappointed.

The sweet sticky sauce was powerful and pungent and the spring onions on the top of the dish added a nice touch. I was also impressed with the amount of chillis I was given with the dish, they got the spice level just right.

The only part of the meal I was disappointed with was the salt and pepper chips. They are a staple of Chinese takeaway. Unfortunately, they were dry and underseasoned.

While I would not normally pick chicken cashew curry and I was surprised to find I enjoyed it and the dish might be something I get again in the future.

I will say that the price is high at £60 and it could put people off. I split the cost with three friends and it came to £15 each which is close to what you would pay at other takeaways.

I think Sixty Kitchen offers an interesting way to approach the Friday night takeaway. The menu changes each month whilst may seem like an unusual concept and I enjoyed broadening my horizons by trying something new.

It is expensive and I don’t think it is the kind of takeaway you would go to every week. However, if you can find people to split the cost the price is worth it due to the quality of the food.
