I tried the new McDonald’s Mighty McMuffin - but left feeling robbed of a rasher

Today’s the day. McDonald’s have launched their long-awaited and much loved Christmas menu, with the last-minute announcement of a brand new breakfast item that will be available for a very limited time.

The fast food chain revealed their new Mighty McMuffin, which offers all the best bits of a fry up on one lightly toasted muffin, so you won’t have to pick between sausage or bacon over the festive period.

The Mighty McMuffin comes with sausage, egg, double bacon and cheese, with a choice of brown sauce or ketchup - sounds good, right? But sadly, it’ll only be around until January.

The Mighty McMuffin costs £3.99 on its own, or is £5.59 as part of a meal, although prices at some franchises may vary. At my local store, a Mighty McMuffin on its own cost 20p more, at £4.19. Only, upon browsing the menu, I stumbled upon an ordering hack that means you can order it all year round.

After tapping into the touchscreen menu, I scrolled to the breakfast items and noted the price of the Mighty Muffin before scrolling across to my usual sausage and egg McMuffin order, which you can pick up for £2.99.

When ordering on these screens, McDonald’s issues a pop up which asks if you’d like to customise your McMuffin, where you can add extra cheese, egg or meat components, with the price of add-ons listed.

Customers can add bacon to their usual sausage McMuffin at a cost of 60p, which takes the total price to £3.59. However McDonald’s told the Manchester Evening News that the Mighty McMuffin includes two pieces of bacon - the one I tried only seemed to have one, but in theory, two pieces of bacon would cost £1.20.

This appeared to bring the personalised McMuffin to £4.19, while featuring all the same ingredients as the Mighty McMuffin, besides the ketchup or brown sauce. Luckily, McDonald’s stores often have ketchup pumps where you can add your own, or you can ask for a pot from behind the counter. I usually have one kicking around in the glovebox of my car, and I’m sure you do, too.

Your only dilemma will be if you want brown sauce - though I’m sure if you ask nicely, the kitchen staff will be willing to help you out. Alternatively, take your own bottle of HP with you.

I tried out the Mighty McMuffin for myself - research purposes, and all that - and the addition of the salty bacon was a delight, although I can’t help but feel robbed of a rasher. The cheese is still the best bit of a McMuffin, though, there’s no question about that. It’s nice and convenient to order in just one tap, rather than going all around the houses to get two extra pieces of bacon, but at least the ordering loophole means you can get your hands on it all year round rather than just until the New Year. So long as you’re happy to source your own sauce.

As well as McDonalds' festive breakfast offering, from today, shoppers can also order the Celebrations McFlurry for £1.79 each, as well as the Big Tasty, with or without bacon priced at £5.29 on its own or £6.89 as a meal. With bacon it will be £5.89 on its own or £7.49 as a meal.

Finally, McDonald's is re-releasing the Festive Pie, offering a Christmassy take on the food chain's classic hot crispy apple pie, filled with mincemeat and custard. The new menu is available every day from today, Wednesday, November 23.
