I tried the new Jaffa Cake donuts and found my new favourite evening snack

Jaffa Cakes are a beloved snack, often accompanied with a comforting cup of scald during a cosy evening.

When you combine the delights of a Jaffa Cake with that of a donut, it turns out that you get a seriously delicious snack that you will find it hard to say no to.

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the McVitie's Jaffa Jonut.

The new ring-shaped snack is comprised of a layer of crackly dark chocolate, light sponge and the tangy orange filling running through the centre.

McVitie's Jaffa Jonuts come in boxes of four, with each Jonut wrapped individually. Once you open each one, you're hit with the smell of tangy orange cake, familiar to Jaffa Cake lovers.

What's next doesn't disappoint, either, is the strong orange flavour in the sponge itself as well as the gooey filling in the middle. It's a real treat for Jaffa Cake fans.

Plus, the layer of dark chocolate adds a welcome hardness to the snack which otherwise is as soft and fluffy as a Madeira cake.

Would I recommend trying them? Admittedly, die-hard Jaffa Cake lovers will be sceptical. Why mess with something that's already so good, right?

The most important thing to know is that the same tangy-sweet Jaffa Cake flavour is still present in donut form, but there is an added softness that veers the snack towards the category of 'cake' rather than 'biscuit'.

Conclusion: The Jaffa Jonut is more of an event, a moment that earns the title of a 'proper treat', perhaps reserved for when you're having someone around for a cup of tea, when you want to impress them with a true unexpected delight.

The boxes of four and individually wrapped Jonuts are available now in all major retailers for €3.35 and €1.35 respectively.
