I tried the Casper Adjustable Base – now, I don't wake up from my husband snoring

White sheets and gray blanket on the Casper Adjustable Base against white walls. .

With eight full-length Homes & Gardens mattress reviews under my belt, I consider myself something of a sleep authority. I've tried memory foam models to ease aches and pains and specialist cooling mattresses for hot sleepers, but until now, I'd never tried an adjustable bed.

When I was first assigned to test the Casper Adjustable Base, I was skeptical. Most of the adjustable beds I see on the market are dizzyingly expensive. The idea of spending thousands of dollars to incrementally raise and lower the head and foot of my mattress didn't sit right with me.

As soon as I actually started testing, I saw that the Casper Adjustable Base has myriad uses to support all sorts of sleepers. From my perspective, it's stopped my husband from snoring, and I couldn't be more grateful. You might use yours to ease your acid reflux or take some pressure off sensitive parts of your body.

Casper Adjustable Base − my honest review

Alongside the Casper Adjustable Base, I tested the Casper Dream Max Mattress, which you can read about in my dedicated review. Long story short, the edge support needs work, but the medium mattress firmness provided near-perfect pressure relief.

Who would suit the Casper Adjustable Base?

  • All sleep positions: some of us are combination sleepers, flipping between our stomachs, backs, and sides in the night. Luckily, this customizable base can support all sleep positions. I found that the ability to raise the head is great for reading and anyone who suffers from acid reflux and desperately needs a more restful night of sleep. The customization is truly limitless and the wireless remote makes it easy to adjust your mattress.
  • Anyone who suffers from aches and pains: if your daily activities require relief for tired muscles at the end of the day, the adjustable base is a good solution. The base has the ability to go into “Zero Gravity Mode,” meaning it is designed for ideal muscle relaxation. I customized my Casper Adjustable Base to take the weight off my hips and lower back, but you could use yours to soothe your neck and shoulders.
  • Couples: if you find yourself being woken up by a snoring partner on a regular basis, this adjustable base could help eliminate those middle-of-the-night wake-ups. If you purchase a Split King and use two Twin XL mattresses, you can maintain your own sleeping preferences while adjusting your partner's side of the bed. Some users have also noted that the ability to raise the head of the bed works well for those using CPAP machines.

What's it like to sleep on the Casper Adjustable Base?

I recommend the Casper Adjustable Base for anyone who has back problems or suffers from health conditions which affect their sleep, including acid reflux and sleep apnea. The customizable comfort and convenience could take the pressure off particular parts of your body to improve your sleep quality.

If you’re used to sleeping on a flat mattress base that doesn’t adjust, sleeping on an adjustable base can take some getting used to, especially if you accidentally fall asleep with it in a different position. For example, if you are reading or watching TV in a more elevated position, then fall asleep, it can take some time to adjust to remembering to grab the remote and change your position before nodding off.

I found the vibrating function relaxing: it helped to lull me to sleep, the same way a white noise machine might. Luckily, the vibrations aren't so loud as to disturb you while you sleep. I managed to sleep right the way through the night with the vibrating function on, more than once.

At first, I was a little intimidated by the remote control and all its various options. I suggest you spend a few minutes playing around to find your preferred settings. It didn't take me long to locate the buttons I'd use most frequently.

Set up is a serious chore, so reserve an afternoon for this step. It took me around two hours to assemble the Casper Adjustable Base, though the directions were clear and all the parts were present. It is also a pretty bulky product, so anyone who struggles with mobility might need assistance getting the product to the right room.

You'll also want ample time and space to move the mattress you’ll be using completely out of the way, making room around the sides of the base to assemble it. So, account for that when you are planning your assembly space and process.

When you go to add your sheets over the mattress, check out if your sheets have enough room and 'give' to stay in place when you adjust the mattress. So, you might find you need a new set of the best bed sheets, depending on what you already have, to keep it from popping off one or more of the sides.

How does the Casper Adjustable Base rate online?

Buyers of the Casper Adjustable Base are overwhelmingly pleased with their purchase: the base boasts a 4.4 average star rating on the Casper site. Buyers seemed especially pleased with the quality of the base, with many wondering why they hadn’t purchased it sooner.

Additionally, those who had back problems, were recovering from surgery or suffered from health conditions, such as acid reflux and sleep apnea, noted the benefits it had made to their lives.

For consumers who didn’t highly recommend the Casper Adjustable Base, it often had less to do with the product and more to do with the shipping and delivery process. Several buyers were still waiting for their shipment to arrive up to two months after their purchase, and others noted that their interaction with customer service was frustrating and not overly productive.

Should I buy the Casper Adjustable Base?

As adjustable beds go, the Casper Adjustable Base is highly affordable. A Queen retails for just $936.75, which is hundreds of dollars cheaper than similar models from Sleep Number. It took me a minute to get my head around the remote control, but now it's easy to adjust the position of my mattress, whether by raising the head or the foot. So far, this at-home luxury is really paying dividends in terms of better sleep.
