I tried one star Nottingham takeaway and had no complaints

Just months ago Fresh Munch was slapped with the dreaded one star food hygiene rating.

After an inspection last November, environmental health officers from Nottingham City Council awarded the Hyson Green takeaway, which specialises in chicken and pizza, with the second-lowest score.

They demanded improvements in all areas of the business, especially the management of food safety.

At the beginning on this year, Fresh Munch owner, Muhammad Ali, told Nottinghamshire Live he was "heartbroken" by the rating, saying it was unjustified.

Judging by the positive online comments, it seemed the practices hadn't had an impact on the quality of the food, at least from the other side of the kitchen.

But was this true, or was it just a case of comments papering over the cracks?

I took a lunchtime stroll down Radford Road to find out.

As I approached the entrance, I wasn't too surprised to not find any obvious sign of its food hygiene sticker - despite it being a requirement.

After receiving a polite welcoming I made my order - one veggie classic pizza, a side of fries and a Pepsi.

Concerns over food hygiene always lead to meat uncertainty, so maybe my vegetarian diet would be my saving grace this time.

It was just myself and my server - the one man takeaway band - in the building as I perched myself on a chair and waited for him to prep my food.

After a decent wait (the longer the better, right?), my order was completed.

Upon lifting the lid of the pizza box I was pleasantly surprised. Whilst maybe a little too tomatoey, the pizza was okay.

It just tasted like your average takeaway pizza but with a nice crispy crust, a fair littering of veg and plenty of cheese to spare.

Not quite Dominoes or Morrisions 'the Best' pizzas, but it was fine enough.

The fries were equally satisfactory. A surprising amount of crunch with an even more surprising level of salt.

Perhaps too salty, as my glass and kitchen tap would attest to.

Overall, it's not what you'd expect of a one star rating takeaway. I had no complaints, and neither did my stomach.
