New Look shoppers went crazy for a “gorgeous” mini dress they spotted online - so I tried it to see what all the fuss was about.
Summer clothing is well and truly back after a sunny spell, which means that shoppers have been keeping an eye on social media to spot items they’d love to find on their next shopping trip.
This week New Look shoppers spotted its Black Gingham Shirred Square Neck Midi Dress on Instagram and were quick to share just how much they loved it in the comments below.

Shoppers were immediately drawn in by the gingham design, which is undoubtedly the trend of the season.
The dress was praised as “beautiful” and some shoppers even claimed it was “a winner” - so I took their advice to see if it lived up to the hype.
The Black Gingham Shirred Square Neck Midi Dress is made from a soft cotton blend and features a square neckline, three-quarter puff sleeves and a shirred top.
Anyone who knows me knows that gingham is very ‘me’ so like many shoppers I was immediately drawn to the dress. However, the shirred top and square neckline did give me pause and by the time it arrived I’d all but convinced myself that the dress was not for me.
The material of the dress was soft and felt much more expensive than its £25 price tag. It was actually a little thicker than I’d expected so any worries I had about it being see-through were put to rest.
The fitting on the dress was to size, with a little wiggle room for anyone who (like me) prefers a looser fit. The material was pleasant to touch and didn’t itch or do any unwanted clinging either.

To say I was floored by the square neckline is an understatement. It’s not a style I’d have usually worn, but paired with the puff sleeves it created the perfect look.
The sleeves came to just below the elbow and added excitement to the outfit - and who doesn’t love a bit of flair?
The shirred top was the part of the dress that I’d been dreading, if I’m honest. From past experience shirred tops tend to cling to all the wrong places and I didn’t want to ruin my new could-be-favourite.
However, once I had the dress on I completely changed my mind. It did cling but to my waist, pulling it in and creating a lovely shape that I’d never found with a midi dress before.
It balanced out the fullness of the bottom half of the dress and allowed all the attention to go to the puff sleeves - just where it should be.
The dress is described as ‘midi’ though I did find it a bit longer than expected. This could be down to my 5ft 4 height though, so it's definitely worth taking your own into account.
Other than this, the dress fit perfectly. The material was beautiful and provided a stunning shape to wear for brunch with the girls or just to pop to the shop.
New Look is definitely winning the ‘summer dress of the year’ award in my books. I’m tempted to buy the dress in the red style too.
New Look’s Black Gingham Shirred Square Neck Midi Dress is priced at £29.99 and is also available in red.
