I tried McDonald’s new McPlant burger and despite the mess it was tasty

The wait is over for vegans and vegetarians, as the greatly anticipated McDonald’s McPlant vegan burger finally arrived in stores last week.

Available on the menu all year round, non-meat eaters can enjoy the vegan burger for £3.69, making it slightly pricier than saver menu items.

The McPlant comes with a Beyond Meat patty layered with vegan cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, mustard and ketchup all put together in the classic sesame bun we know and love.

We took some time to review the new vegan product which has been receiving a lot of hype.

How it looks

First impressions? I wasn’t overly impressed with the general appearance of the McPlant burger, it was very saucy.

On the outside, it looked like a classic McDonald’s burger with the good old sesame seed bun and perfect round shape.

Once you took the bun off though, there was a bit of a sauce catastrophe, to the point where it was spilling out the sides when I picked it up.

I’m all for a bit of sauce on my burger, but if it gets to the point where the bun keeps sliding off that’s where things can get tricky.

How it tastes

I was actually really impressed with the general taste of the McPlant burger, the Beyond Meat tasted much like the real thing.

Admittedly, this is the first vegan burger I’ve ever had so I don’t have a lot to compare it to, but for a first go, I was rather impressed.

I wasn't impressed with all the sauce but it was still a good burger (Emily Sleight/ Liverpool ECHO)

The mixture of the vegan burger sauce, mustard and ketchup made it taste exactly like an ordinary burger from the saver menu.

It almost had a bit of a chargrilled smoky taste to it which the ordinary burgers don’t really have, so that was a bonus in itself.

Granted, you can tell you’re not eating meat, but the overall taste of the burger could definitely have people fooled.

The verdict

After digging in to the McPlant burger I came to two conclusions:

One: Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, this burger may have looked a mess but it tasted fabulous.

Two: The consistency of the burger is definitely different to an ordinary burger, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

If you’re vegan or vegetarian, or just wanted to cut down on meat, the McPlant is a perfect option for a fast food treat.

This definitely won’t be the first time I tuck into a McPlant, McDonald’s have seriously impressed us with this one, so we're giving it a 5/5.
