I tried authentic Italian pizza in the heart of Broadmead

If you want to avoid the big chains, the rain and the extortionate prices, good food is not always easy to come by in Broadmead. You can’t go wrong with pizza but more often than not, as a vegetarian, there are generally two options; a boring margarita or a vegetarian pizza with everything shoved on top.

A Taste of Napoli offers something different and the pizza tastes how it should even when it’s vegan. A slice will set you back between £3.50 and £5.00 but that is enough for a light lunch.

Although the upstairs seating was closed off and the outdoor seating was drenched in rain water, there was just enough space for us to sit downstairs. It was reassuring to hear staff and customers speak Italian not only because I like the sound of the language but also because it’s a sign of its authenticity.

In a previous job I used to meet a lot of Italian students who had recently arrived in the UK and their first complaint was always the food, including Italian restaurants, but I think even they would be impressed with this place.

I tried a slice with aubergine and another with mushrooms and vegan sausage. Even though the café serves meat, the range of vegan options is impressive. They have vegan ice cream, cake and even vegan croissants which are the same price as the non-vegan croissants.

I would never have guessed my pizza slice had vegan cheese and was impressed by the range of options, despite not everything on the menu being available. I probably went too far when I ordered arancini (£2.50) and a pudding as well because I left feeling pretty stuffed.

I would definitely recommend this place which is also good for food on the go as all the pizzas and arancini are pre-prepared. You can also get panini sandwiches which are all £7.50 each including a vegan BLT.

The family-run business brings a piece of Italy to Bristol and not just any piece of Italy but Naples, the city famous for inventing pizza. They also have shelves full of Italian ingredients for those who want to cook Italian food at home.
