I tried a 'Too Good To Go' bag in Liverpool and found a new venue for a hangover cure

I'm a sucker for surprises. Birthdays or Christmases, no matter the occasion, I love them.

So when I came across the Too Good To Go you can imagine how excited I was.

It combines my two favourite things - food and surprises, what's not to like?

The app lets you 'rescue a Magic Bag of food that would otherwise go to waste'.

What is inside though is where all the mystery lies with no real certainties of what you may end up with. The contents are simply described as 'great food at great prices, served with a side of environmental kudos.'

The Too Good To Go website reads: “Every day, delicious, fresh food goes to waste at cafes, restaurants, hotels, shops and supermarkets - just because it hasn’t sold in time."

In the Liverpool area, you can choose from a number of businesses including Caffe Nero and Barburrito among others to help prevent waste.

Greggs proves to be the most popular usually selling out a day in advance.

I opted to rescue a bag from Esquires Coffee in the city centre.

Priced at just £3.90, I can see why they are called magic.

However, having never visited this particular coffee shop before, I wasn't sure where to set my expectations. I should have set them quite high.

A sneak peek while walking home and the goods all appeared to be neatly wrapped.

At the top of the pile was four beautifully crafted biscuits, two crumbled in golden oats and the others butterscotch flavoured.

Although rather dry and crumbly, these border biscuits were a match made in heaven with a milky cup of tea.

In hindsight, I should have looked at all the items before eating the biscuits first as the next item was a slightly burnt cheese and bacon toastie. Not a problem but not usually one for savoury after sweet snacks.

Having halved it with my hungover flatmate, he described it as a god send that "sorted his hangover right out."

So maybe we've just found a new venue for a cure.

A blueberry muffin and raspberry bun were also in the bag. At this stage it felt it had been a lot of sugar and carbs, which wasn't over when I next discovered a chocolate croissant.

The muffin didn't last long in our house with my flatmate, which I took as a good sign.

Before I tucked into the melting goodness of the croissant, I apologised in advanced to my pancreas.

Now I think it's safe to say I won't be checking my blood sugars for the next few days.
